The Chinatown Business Improvement Area is once again bringing back a widely received winter event - Chinatown Ice Sculpture Showcase (CISS). This 3rd edition falls on the Chinese Zodiac - 'Year of the Ox' - with the display of five (5) life-size ice sculptures of an Ox to celebrate.
Each Ox will be represented in different shapes, back lit and colourized for ideal Instagram and Facebook photo moments. The colourized themes are:
The Lunar New Year Ox celebrates Calgary's multiculturalism
Location: Dragon City Mall (328, Centre St. S)
The Diversity Ox signifies Chinatown lives in harmony with Calgary
Location: Silver Dragon Restaurant (106, 3 Ave. SE)
The Community Safety Ox brings unity and safety to Calgary
Location: Golden Inn Restaurant (107, 2 Ave. SE)
The Youth & Fantasy Ox instills new ideas for our future
Location: HSBC Chinatown Branch (111, 3 Ave. SE)
The Love & Family Ox appreciates your love to our city
Location: Great Taste Restaurant (123, 2 Ave. SE)
These themes are consistent for both Chinese Lunar New Years and Chinook Blast Winter Festival. As a pedestrian event, this is a walking visit through Chinatown and compliance with AHS public gathering restrictions should be achievable (to be determined).

Chinatown Ice-Sculptures Showcase
In 2018, the Chinatown Business Improvement Area had a dream to light up Chinatown with Ice-Sculptures and carvings during Chinese Lunar New Years to celebrate what this unique community is all about.
Our dream was realized in 2019 (the Year of the Pig) when we presented 12 unique carvings at the James Short Park for three weeks. In 2020 (the Year of the Rat), Calgary Chinatown BIA once again re-upped CISS by bringing another dozen ice-sculptures to various locations in the area.
